The star, Ferris Bueller (played by Matthew Broderick) was a senior who was very bored as graduation neared and decided to skip classes and take a day off (his ninth of the school year). He convinced his best friend (Cameron Frye, played by Alan Ruck) and his girlfriend (Sloane Peterson, played by Mia Sara), to take the day off with him. The three best friends had a blast. They drove around in the gorgeous, pristine Ferrari (a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California) of Cameron’s dad. They went to the Art Institute of Chicago, to the top of the Sears Tower (one of the world’s tallest structures), to a great restaurant, to a baseball game at Wrigley Field (where Ferris caught a ball), to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, to a swimming pool and jacuzzi, and to a parade (at which Ferris Bueller jumped up onto a float and started to sing “Twist and Shout” and brought thousands of parade attendees to their feet dancing). There were some interesting subplots along the way. Cameron learned to stand up for himself against his father’s domination; Ferris Bueller’s sister (Jeanie Bueller, played by Jennifer Grey, perhaps better known for her role opposite Patrick Swayze in the movie “Dirty Dancing”), learned to accept his popularity without feeling less for it; Sloane learned just how much she really loved Ferris. Everything that could go right went right. It was a virtually perfect day for Ferris Bueller and his companions. The movie inadvertently and nonchalantly makes this important point: a guy has more fun when he does fun things with his beautiful girlfriend! Great restaurants make great food, but that food is much more special when shared. Great tourist sites are beautiful, but those sites are more beautiful when shared. Having fun is fun, but that fun is magnified when shared. The movie is right: A guy needs a gal with whom to share his fun! Doing cool things by yourself just isn’t as much fun as doing it with a gal! Really, Ferris Bueller would have had a boring day off if his gal had not been with him!
